About Elgin

Named 2018 River Town of the Year by Iowa Rivers Revival

"Elgin is a Turkey River Recreational Corridor Community; the Turkey River Recreational Corridor is the only river corridor in the state designated as an Iowa Great Place.

Elgin is known by locals as the “Little Switzerland of Iowa” because of the beautiful rolling hills and valleys surrounding the town. Visitors enjoy riverside camping at one of the 36 sites in the Elgin Campground, canoeing and kayaking on the Turkey River that runs through town, and fishing on the Turkey River and fishing pond in Gilbertson Conservation Education Area. The fishing pond is a great place for people of all ages to catch largemouth bass, blue gill, and channel catfish.

One of the best fishing stretches of the Turkey River is located from the City of Clermont to the Gilbertson Park Narrows Access. In this stretch find all three of Iowa’s trout species, walleye, small mouth bass, and more than 70 other game and non-game species.

Explore over five miles of horseback riding, biking, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, and hiking trials in the Gilbertson Conservation Education Area. Also explore one of the most extensive historic farming collections, touchable wildlife, natural history collections, a petting zoo, corn maze and many other visitor amenities at the Gilbertson Nature Center."
